An Old Song

...by Riot, Revel, Waltz, and War...

They were so few ... We know not in what manner
Or where or when they fell--whether they went
Riding into the dark under Christ's banner
Or died beneath the blood-red dragon of Gwent.

But this we know: That when the Saxon rout
Swept over them, the sun no longer shone
On Britain, and the last lights flickered out;
And men in the darkness murmured: Arthur is gone...

-"Hic Jacet Arthurus Rex Quondam Rexque Futurus," Francis Brett Young

"I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking."
-"Sea Fever," John Masefield

Carmarthen: Welsh Caerfyrddin, said to be the birthplace of Myrddin.

I'm a nerdy, history-loving fangirl of legal age in all jurisdictions (well over 21, in other words); I'm mostly into genre fiction. I'm currently a lot more active on Tumblr as carmarthenfan, with various sideblogs.

This is a journal about fannish things. I enjoy media, particularly fantasy, historical fiction, and space opera. I consume it voraciously, or at least I used to (right now the only things I'm consuming voraciously are fanfiction and Hungarian musical theatre). I am also a history geek, and I post about Cool History Stuff sometimes as well, or at least I used to. I have an obsession with Things Arthurian. Also, currently, things related to 19th century France.

I write fanfiction, for a variety of reasons, but primarily because that is how I naturally react to text. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of other people's universes, and I do so with respect and love for the source (most of the time). I write and read het (male/female), slash (male/male and female/female), assorted polyamorous fic, and gen (non-romantic) fanfiction in a variety of genres and a gazillion fandoms. I love female characters, and male characters, and characters that aren't human. This journal may occasionally contain discussion of sexual matters, both queer and straight, monogamous and polyamorous, and sometimes kinky. Discussion of sexual matters may or may not be cut: this is NOT a work-safe journal.

I am currently writing primarily

  • Rómeó és Júlia

  • Les Misérables

Previous recent and perennial fandoms include

  • The Eagle

  • Novels of Rosemary Sutcliff, particularly Frontier Wolf and Blood Feud

  • Tamora Pierce - Tortall novels

  • Star Wars

I read way too many fandoms to list.

I also sort of maintain anthropomor_fic, fulfiller of all your desires for such pairings as Pure Maths/Applied Maths and English/Latin. SOMEONE PLEASE TAKE IT OVER. The sadly neglected swfemproject is for encouraging fiction about the many women with no onscreen stories in the Star Wars movies (art also welcome). sutcliff_swap is an annual exchange for fanworks based on the works of historical fiction author Rosemary Sutcliff, now under the fearless leadership of riventhorn. I also co-moderate sutcliff_talk, a discussion comm for the same.

On Tumblr I'm a mod for grisettefandom and lesmisladies, which mostly means reblogging fanart and graphics of female characters in Les Misérables.

I have gotten back into fandom with a vengeance after many years out.

1. Feel free to friend me--you don't have to ask first, but if you want to introduce yourself, here's a post for that. Likewise, feel free to unfriend me at any point. If you find me annoying, in fact, I'd rather you did.

2. I will most likely add you back if you write about interests we have in common.

3. I probably won't add you back if your LJ is primarily about real life or fandoms I don't read, since I'm trying to keep my reading list manageable. Unless your real life involves geeky babbling about things I find entertaining, like writing and science and history and wombats.

4. Feel free to remove me from your friendslist at any time. I might not even notice, given the size of mine, and I recognize that fannish interests diverge over time.

More about me and my 248234892481291937 fandoms (probably out of date).

I also have a Dreamwidth account. I crosspost all fic, but other posts are mostly just on LJ right now.

Miscellaneous Fannish Stuff

The Maul/Obi-Wan Index, updated when I find new fic/poetry/vids for this rather rare pairing.

"Full fathom five my true love lies
In a fine wooden casket with gold on his eyes
Where is the glory and where is the pride?
Where is the joy for the pirate's bride?

Here in the light at the edge of the world
He'd wait for a ship with its black sail furled
And day after day he would stand on the shore
And dream of the life that they knew before"
-"The Pirate's Bride," Sting

"Know you what earth shall lose to-night, what rich uncounted loans,
What heavy gold of tales untold you bury with my bones?
My loves in deep dim meadows, my ships that rode at ease,
Ruffling the purple plumage of strange and secret seas.
To see this fair earth as it is to me alone was given,
The blow that breaks my brow to-night shall break the dome of heaven.
The skies I saw, the trees I saw after no eyes shall see,
To-night I die the death of God; the stars shall die with me;
One sound shall sunder all the spears and break the trumpet's breath:
You never laughed in all your life as I shall laugh in death."
-"The Last Hero," G.K. Chesterton (1901)
